Andrea Giovannini graduated as an actor in 1990 from the Acting School in
Bologna directed by Galante Garrone. After several years working with
theatre companies, in 1997 he began studying opera singing with director
Massimo Romeo Piparo. He later made his debut in musicals, performing
leading roles in several Italian productions such as Jesus Christ
Superstar, My Fair Lady, and Evita. He then
debuted as Danilo in The Merry Widow under Massimo de Bernart,
further exploring the Mozart repertoire under the guidance of Claudio
Desderi, performing the roles of Don Ottavio, Basilio, and Ferrando in
numerous productions. Noteworthy is his participation in the historic
production of Così fan tutte at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan,
directed by Giorgio Strehler.
Andrea Giovannini also specialized in the Rossini repertoire: Count
Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Teatro Massimo in Palermo
under Claudio Desderi and at the Tuscania Festival under Francesco La
Vecchia; Idreno in Semiramide at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome
under Maestro Gianluigi Gelmetti, and later in the Tuscany Circuit. In
2006 he also began performing as a lyric tenor: Fenton in Falstaff
in 2007 at the Grange Park Festival in London; Rodolfo in La Bohème
in Dublin; Alfredo in La Traviata in Nuremberg, Dijon, and at
the Saint-Céré Festival in France; the Count di Bosco Nero in La
Vedova Scaltra in Nice.
He also performed the role of Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi in
Modena; Camille de Rosillon in The Merry Widow at the Teatro
dell’Opera in Rome under Daniel Oren; Alfredo in La Traviata in
a production by Opera Éclatée; the title role in Les Contes
d’Hoffmann at the Saint-Céré Festival; Edgardo in Lucia di
Lammermoor in Dijon; Rodolfo and later Tamino (Die Zauberflöte)
in Massy, where he also performed as Carlos Medina in La Belle de
Cadix (with revivals in Clermont-Ferrand and on tour). He sang
Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore with Opera Zuid and performed Giovanna
d’Arco (as Carlo VII) with the Poznań Philharmonic. Giovannini also
appeared in Verdi’s Requiem with the Brabant Orchestra in
Eindhoven (under Kees Bakels) and again in Poznań under Renato Palumbo.

Lammermoor (Normanno); Le Nozze di Figaro (Basilio); Tosca
(Spoletta); Eugene Onegin, Benvenuto Cellini, La Traviata in Rome;
L’amour des trois oranges, Manon Lescaut (Edmondo) under
the baton of Bruno Bartoletti in Florence; Madama Butterfly (Goro)
in Naples and Parma; La Forza del Destino and Falstaff in
Parma; Nabucco (Abdallo) in Cagliari; Norma (Flavio) in
Turin; La Rondine (Prunier) in Lucca, Pisa, Livorno, Modena, and
Ravenna.
Most recently, he sang at the Teatro Regio in Pagliacci, Falstaff,
Paer’s Agnese; Edmondo in Manon Lescaut in Verona; Action
in West Side Story in Rome with the Orchestra of Santa Cecilia
conducted by Antonio Pappano; Die Zauberflöte in Catania; Adriana
Lecouvreur (Abate) alongside Anna Netrebko and conducted by Marco
Armiliato at the Salzburg Festival, where he returned for Il Tabarro;
Turandot at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago; La Forza
del Destino in Parma; Dido and Aeneas and Die sieben
Todsünden at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna and in Reggio Emilia;
and Il Tabarro at the Opéra National de Paris.
As a member of the Wiener Staatsoper ensemble, Andrea Giovannini sang in
productions such as Madama Butterfly, Salome, Tosca, Falstaff, Le
Nozze di Figaro, Adriana Lecouvreur, Werther, Boris Godunov, Der
Rosenkavalier, La Fanciulla del West, Les Dialogues des Carmélites.
