The Argentinian born soprano Virginia Tola completed her
vocal studies at Teatro Colon’s Superior Arts Institute in Buenos Aires and she
continued to specialize under the guidance of Mrs. Raina Kabaivanska. She came
to the international attention when was awarded the First Prize in International
Competition of Song “Queen Sonja” in Oslo, Norway, where the jury was composed
by eminent figures of the Opera world, such as Birgit Nilsson, Christa Ludwig,
Theo Adam and Ingrid Bjoner.
As a consequence of her success in Oslo, Mrs. Tola toured
several times Scandinavia invited by the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra under the
conduction of maestros Marris Janssons and Marcello Viotti. Ms. Tola was
awarded three main prizes at the “Operalia” International Contest: the Audience
Prize, the Zarzuela Prize and the prize granted by the philanthropist Loyd
Rigler. During the same season, Ms. Tola made her stage debut in the world
première of Don Juan by J. Carlos Zorzi and as Antonia in Les Contes
D’Hoffmann at Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. Ever since then, Ms.
Tola performed in Mozart’s Così fan Tutte, as Fiordiligi, at the
Theatre Royal de la Monnaie De Munt in Brussels, at Teatro Colon in Buenos
Aires and at De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam; in Don Giovanni, as
Donna Elvira, at Teatro de la Maestranza de Sevilla; in Le Nozze di Figaro,
as Contessa de Almaviva, at the Palau de les arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, at
the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie De Munt and in Opera de Monte Carlo; La
Traviata, as Violetta Valery, at Theatre Royal de la Monnaie De Munt and
at Opera-Lausanne; in Mefistofele, as Margherita, at Teatro Colón in
Buenos Aires; in La Bohème, as Mimì, in cities including Los Angeles,
Bordeaux, Washington, Rome, Turin, Bregenz, Oslo and Klagenfurt; in Falstaff,
as Alice Ford, at Opera Royal de Wallonie; Carmen, as Micaela, in
Madrid, Cagliari, Turin, Washington, Oslo, Cleveland and Buenos Aires; Faust,
as Marguerite, at Teatro Verdi in Trieste; in The Merry Widow, as
Valencienne with the Los Angeles Opera; in Luisa Miller, embodying
Luisa Miller in Liege; in Pagliacci, as Nedda, at Teatro Argentino de
La Plata; in Otello, as Desdemona, in Santa Fe and Rosina in Il
Barbiere di Siviglia at Oslo’s Den Norske Opera. Besides her opera
appearances, Ms. Tola usually performs in concerts all over the world.
Many of her worldwide performances include massive opera
and zarzuela concerts with Placido Domingo, in venues that included cities
such as Moscow, Quebec, Baden-Baden, Shanghai, Washington D.C., Los Angeles,
Barcelona, Halle, Mexico City, Benidorm, Taipei, Granada, Lisbon, San Antonio,
Chengdu, Astana, Caracas, Zacatecas, Tampico, Trondheim, Sonderborg, Sofia and
Guadalajara, among others. Ms. Tola’s discography includes Ginastera’s Don
Rodrigo and Milena and Bacalov’s Triple Concerto on Delos International.
In the past seasons, Ms. Tola performed: Un Ballo in
Maschera, La Forza del destino and a Gala concert at the Teatro
Regio in Parma, in Buenos Aires and at the Arena in Verona where she
was also engaged in a Gala Concert with Placido Domingo; Otello in
Modena and Piacenza, Stiffelio in Monte Carlo, Nabucco at the
Macerata Opera Festival and at the Opéra Royal de Wammonie in Liège; Don Giovanni in Oviedo; Falstaff in
Sao Paolo. Most recently she sang in: Andrea Chénier (Maddalena) in Sassari; Un Ballo in Maschera at the Teatro
Comunale in Bologna, at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo and in Seoul; Tosca
at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome and in Dresden; Don Carlo
at the
Escorial in Madrid and at the Grange Park Opera in London; Macbeth
(Lady) at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo; Tosca (title role) with the
Opera in Rome at the Terme di Caracalla and at the Ravenna Festival; Suor Angelica in Cagliari and Luisa Fernanda in Tenerife.
Active also on the concert side Ms Tola recently performed Poulenc
Gloria at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari and Requiem by Verdi at the
Teatro dal Verme in Milan with the Orchestra Verdi.
Virginia Tola’s future plans include: Tosca on tour in Italy and at the Opéra Royal Wallonie in Liège; Un Ballo in Maschera at the Teatro Regio in Parma; a series of concert in Santa Fe.
