Vincenzo Costanzo, born in 1991, is among the most acclaimed tenors of
the new generation on the international opera scene. He began studying
voice at a very young age, first with Marcello Ferraresi and later under
the guidance of Piero Giuliacci.
Winner of the “Oscar della Lirica” and the prestigious Enrico Caruso
Prize, he is a regular guest at major opera houses where he is frequently
invited: Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Arena di Verona, Teatro dell’Opera di
Roma, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro Real
in Madrid, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Dutch
National Opera in Amsterdam, and San Francisco Opera, working with
renowned conductors such as Myung-whun Chung, James Conlon, Daniele Gatti,
Michele Mariotti, Riccardo Muti, Stefano Montanari, Daniel Oren, and Juraj
Valčuha, and stage directors including Franco Zeffirelli, Pierluigi Pizzi,
Damiano Michieletto, Emma Dante, Liliana Cavani, Ferzan Ozpetek, and
Massimo Popolizio, to name a few.
Vincenzo Costanzo made his debut in 2012 in Macbeth conducted by
Andrea Battistoni, followed by significant Verdi roles: Rodolfo in Luisa
Miller at Teatro Real in Madrid and at Teatro Verdi in Busseto for
the Verdi bicentenary (conducted by Donato Renzetti and Leo Nucci);
Alfredo in La traviata at Teatro San Carlo and at Deutsche Oper
Berlin; Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera in London; Simon
Boccanegra in Montpellier; and a recent success in Ernani in
Antwerp.
He first performed the role of Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly in
2014 at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under Juraj Valčuha. Since then, he
has sung this role over 300 times, becoming one of its most acclaimed and
sought-after interpreters.
In the early years of his career, he sang Rodolfo in La bohème
in Palermo and Naples (later returning there in Madama Butterfly),
Ruggero in La Rondine in Berlin directed by Rolando Villazón,
Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Puccini Festival in Torre del
Lago, and later in Rome and Seville; Roberto in Le Villi at
Staatstheater Mainz; Rinuccio in the opera-film Gianni Schicchi
directed by Damiano Michieletto and conducted by Stefano Montanari. Among
his most notable roles is also Maurizio di Sassonia in Adriana
Lecouvreur.
In recent months, Costanzo has earned critical acclaim for his
performances in Maria egiziaca by Respighi at Teatro La Fenice
(directed by Pier Luigi Pizzi and released on DVD), Le Villi at
Berlin’s Konzerthaus, and as Mario Cavaradossi in a new production of Tosca
at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino conducted by Daniele Gatti and staged by
Massimo Popolizio - a role in which he was later applauded at Teatro
dell’Opera di Roma and Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari.
In 2024, the centenary of Puccini’s death, he played a central role at
the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago, opening with Le Willis and
closing with Madama Butterfly, marking 120 years since its
premiere. He also returned to Maggio Musicale Fiorentino as Pinkerton once
again under Daniele Gatti. Afterward, he added another important role to
his repertoire, debuting in Cavalleria Rusticana conducted by
Riccardo Muti on tour in China.
The 2025 season opens at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma in the role of
Cavaradossi in Tosca conducted by Daniel Oren, followed by his
French debut in Toulouse in Adriana Lecouvreur and a return to the
Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago as Pinkerton. Upcoming engagements
include Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera at Teatro di San Carlo in
Naples with Pinchas Steinberg, Don José in Carmen at Teatro
Petruzzelli in Bari, and Cavaradossi in Tosca at both
Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Teatro Regio di Torino.
With each new performance, Vincenzo Costanzo continues to captivate
audiences and solidify his place as a leading figure in today’s operatic
landscape.
