Russian-born baritone Rodion Pogossov currently holds American and
Russian citizenship.
He joined the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the
Metropolitan Opera at the beginning of his career in the 2000/2001 season.
He made his Carnegie Hall debut with The Metropolitan Opera Chamber
Ensemble, singing Stravinsky’s Renard under the baton of James
Levine, and the following season gave his first Carnegie Hall recital.
From there, his outstanding career unfolded.
Now based in Cincinnati, he regularly sings the role of Guglielmo in Così
fan tutte, as well as in Glyndebourne and at the MET. Other major
operatic roles include: Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, which
he has sung in numerous theatres across the world, including the Hamburg
State Opera, Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Metropolitan Opera, Los Angeles
Opera, Munich Bavarian Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Minnesota Opera,
Palm Beach Opera, Teatro Comunale Pergolesi in Jesi and Canadian Opera.
In the past seasons he made multiple debuts, including: Don Giovanni
with the Oviedo Opera; Die Zauberflöte with the LA Opera and at
the Lincoln Center in New York; Il Barbiere di Siviglia with the
LA Opera and at the Minnesota Opera; Così fan tutte at the MET,
conducted by James Levine and streamed on an HD live broadcast; La
Bohème at the Michigan Opera Theatre, at the MET, at the Royal Opera
Covent Garden; Le Comte Ory with the Seattle Opera; Manon
Lescaut at the Bavarian State Opera; Pagliacci at the MET; Il
Trovatore at Opera Graz, Don Pasquale at the Opera La
Monnaie and Carmen at the Seattle Opera.
More recently, he sang in Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Figaro) at
Teatro Regio in Turin and at the Cincinnati Opera, L’Elisir d’amore
(Belcore) at the Seattle Opera, Makropulos Case at the Malmö Opera,
La Bohème (Marcello) at the Welsh National Opera, Metropolitan
Opera and Munich Bavarian National Opera; La Forza del Destino at
the Royal Opera Covent Garden, Pique Dame at the Opera Liceu
Barcelona; Il Turco in Italia at the Glyndebourne Festival and La
Cenerentola at the LA Opera.
Also a wonderful recitalist, solo appearances have included St. John’s
Smith Square, Suntory Hall, Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam,
Vancouver Recital Society, a Rachmaninov recital at the Wigmore Hall
accompanied by Iain Burnside in 2014, as well as a Medtner recital in
2019. He has also performed La Scala di Seta under the baton of
Enrique Mazzola and the Orchestre National d’Ile-de-France and
Rachmaninov’s The Bells at the Vara Konserthus. He regularly
performs Carmina Burana, including appearances with the Royal
Liverpool Philharmonic, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Simon Bolivar Orchestra
Venezuela, Spanish National Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, London
Philharmonic Orchestra, which has been released on CD.
Rodion continues to work with world-renowned conductors such as: James
Levine, Jean-Christoph Spinosi, Kent Nagano, Yves Abel and James Conlon,
to name a few.
As a recording artist, his discography includes a solo recital disc for
the prestigious EMI Debut Series, which received great acclaim. This was
followed by a disc of Rachmaninov songs with pianist Iain Burnside,
released in February 2014 and Bellini’s Adelson e Salvini with
Opera Rara.
Future projects include: Die Zauberflöte (Papageno) in Treviso
and Padua.
