Paolo Olmi studied with Massimo Pradella and Franco Ferrara in Rome and started his conducting career in 1979. Since his operatic debut in 1986 at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, he has conducted in numerous international concert halls and opera houses, including: Mosè in Egitto at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, at the Bayerisches Staatsoper in Munich invited by Wolfgang Sawallisch and at the Royal Opera House-Covent Garden in London; Guillaume Tell staged by Pier Luigi Pizzi at the Theatre de Champs Elysees in Paris, production named "Best Opera of the Year" by French critics; Il Barbiere di SivigliaLa Gazza Ladra, Nabucco and Turandot at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona; Verdi's Requiem and a concert performance of Nabucco at the Royal Festival Hall in London; Manon Lescaut at Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires; Rossini's Le Siege de Corinthe in Genoa; Rossini's Stabat Mater with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and London Symphony Chorus at the Arena in Verona; Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro at the Opéra National de Lyon; Tosca, Don Carlos, Ernani and Rossini's Stabat Mater at the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg; Madame Butterfly at the Royal Danish Opera; Don Pasquale at the Chicago Lyric Opera; La Fanciulla del West, La Forza del Destino and Il Trovatore at the Deutsche Oper Berlin; Il Barbiere di Siviglia and La Forza del Destino at the Hamburgische Staatsoper; La Bohème in Athens; Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Staatsoper Stuttgart; Nabucco, Un Ballo un Maschera and L'Elisir d'Amore (production released in DVD) at the New National Theatre in Tokyo; and Aida at the Shanghai Opera House in a joint collaboration with the Teatro Comunale of Florence.

The Italian Maestro enjoys a prolific concert activity, collaborating with such orchestras as Tokyo Philharmonic, Orchestra di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Orchestre National de France, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, RAI Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House-Covent Garden, to name a few.

From 1990 to 1993 Paolo Olmi was Music Director of the RAI Orchestra in Rome. From 2006 to 2011 he was Music Director of the Opéra National de Lorraine in Nancy.  From 2002 he is visiting professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Highlights of his past performances are: La Gioconda at the Deutsche Oper Berlin; Falstaff, Jerusalem, Adriana Lecouvreur, Guillaume Tell and a concert offered by the Television to the Queen of Holland recorded by EMI Classic at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; L'Elisir d'Amore, Un Ballo in Maschera, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and L'Italiana in Algeri at the Opéra de Bordeaux; Aida and Lucia di Lammermoor at the Savonlinna Opera Festival; L'Italiana in Algeri in Nancy and Bologna; Cavalleria Rusticana and Zanetto in Lecce; Don Pasquale in Toulouse; La Traviata at the Savonlinna Opera Festival; Otello in Stockholm. On the symphonic side Mr. Olmi lately performed  series of concerts with the Israel Symphony Orchestra, with the Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra and he conducted Stabat Mater by Pergolesi in Jerusalem and in Ravenna (concert broadcast by the National Italian Television).  Most recently he has conducted Semiramide in Bordeaux; La Traviata in Toulon; Aida in Massy; Pagliacci in Oman with Rome Teatro dell'Opera.
