Gianfranco Montresor

Born in Verona, graduated from the Conservatory of Brescia, Gianfranco Montresor made his debut in 1993 at the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona in Paolo Arcà's Gattabianca followed by Carmen (Escamillo) at the San Severo Festival and La Bohème (Marcello) at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo.

His brilliant and rapid career soon took him to the stage of numerous theatres including the New National Theatre in Tokyo, Wexford Festival Opera, New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, Teatro de São Carlos in Lisbon, Macerata Opera Festival, Teatro Filarmonico in Verona, Teatro Regio in Parma, Teatro Verdi in Trieste, Teatro dell'Opera in Rome and Teatro delle Muse in Ancona.

In the course of his career, he has had the opportunity to work with conductors such as Antonello Allemandi, Bruno Bartoletti, Yoram David, Jacques Delacôte, Renato Palumbo, Stefano Ranzani, Donato Renzetti, Keri-Lynn Wilson, Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta, John Elliot Gardiner, Daniel Oren, Marco Armiliato, Daniel Barenboim, Pinchas Steinberg, and with directors such as Yuri Alexandrov, Hugo de Ana and Giuseppe Patroni Griffi.

His repertoire includes titles such as Madama Butterfly (Sharpless), Cavalleria Rusticana (Alfio), Fidelio (Don Pizarro), Don Carlo (Rodrigo), La Traviata (Germont), La Bohème (Marcello), Carmen (Escamillo), L'Elisir d'amore (Belcore), Assassinio nella cattedrale, Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Figaro), Attila (Ezio), Simon Boccanegra (Paolo Albiani), Otello (Jago), L'enfance du Christ by Berlioz and Sly by Wolf Ferrari.

The collaboration with Teatro alla Scala began in 2007 with Fabio Vacchi's new opera Teneke and continued in 2008 with Prokofiev's Il Giocatore conducted by Daniel Baremboim. With the same opera, his debut at the Staatsoper in Berlin also in 2008.

In past seasons he sang: Rigoletto (Monterone) at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London; La Fanciulla del West in Monte Carlo; Messa di Gloria and Simon Boccanegra in Genoa; Cavalleria Rusticana and Madama Butterfly in Ancona; Rigoletto in Taormina; Aida at the 'Festival La Perla' in Switzerland; Ernani, Manon Lescaut, Un ballo in maschera, Tristan und Isolde, Tosca and Carmen in Rome; Turandot, Carmen and Traviata at the Arena di Verona; Don Pasquale in Basel; Turandot in Oman; Madama Butterfly in Klagenfurt; Rigoletto and I Puritani at the Liceu in Barcelona; Simon Boccanegra, La Fanciulla del West and Rigoletto in Naples and Simon Boccanegra in Bari.

Recent engagements include: Salome and Madama Butterfly at the Filarmonico in Verona; Rigoletto at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice, in Genoa and at the Arena in Verona; Flauto Magico at the San Carlo in Naples; Un Ballo in Maschera and Ernani in Oviedo, Filarmonico in Verona, Seville and Nancy; La Fanciulla del West at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna; Fedora at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan; Adriana Lecouvreur and Turandot in Catania and Puccini's Trittico in Turin.

Upcoming engagements will see him perform Rigoletto and Les Dialogues des Carmelites in Venice and Madama Butterfly in Catania.
