Claudio Sgura is considered one of the most important baritones of his
generation, regularly invited by the most prestigious Italian and
international opera houses, where he particularly distinguishes himself in
the Verdi, Puccini and verismo repertoire.
Born in Puglia, he began his vocal studies in Lecce with soprano Maria
Mazzotta. Winner of the prestigious “Voci Verdiane” International Singing
Competition in Busseto in 2006, he made his debut the following year at
the Teatro alla Scala in the role of Sharpless in Madama Butterfly,
under the musical direction of Myung-whun Chung.
Since then, he has performed in the world’s leading opera houses,
including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Wiener Staatsoper, the
Opéra National de Paris, the Bayerische Staatsoper, the Sydney Opera
House, the New National Theatre Tokyo, the Teatro de la Maestranza in
Seville, ABAO Bilbao Opera, Astana Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Den Norske
Opera & Ballet in Oslo, the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Teatro La
Fenice in Venice, Teatro Regio in Turin, Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Teatro
Regio di Parma and Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa.
In recent seasons he made his debut as Scarpia in Tosca at the
Metropolitan Opera in New York, as Miller in Luisa Miller at the
Teatro di San Carlo, in the title role of Rigoletto in Bogotá, and as
Gellner in La Wally at the Teatro Municipale di Piacenza. He
performed Tosca in Turin, Rome, Cagliari, Tokyo, Sydney, Melbourne
and Stockholm; Otello in Munich and Hamburg; Aida in
Salerno; Il trovatore in Beijing; and Madama Butterfly in
Naples. He sung Jack Rance in La fanciulla del West in Milan,
Hamburg and Beijing, and Claudio in Amleto by Franco Faccio at the
Bregenz Festival.
More recently, he made his debut as Michonnet in Adriana Lecouvreur
in the Emilia-Romagna opera circuit, Lescaut in Manon Lescaut at
the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, and Renato in Un ballo in maschera in
Oslo. He took part in the world premiere of Edith by Maurizio
Fabrizio in Genoa. He returned to the role of Scarpia at the Royal Opera
House, at the Caracalla Festival, and in Prague, Rome, Bologna, Hong Kong,
Beijing and Norway; he performed Gérard in Andrea Chénier in
Lisbon, Monte-Carlo and at the Macerata Opera Festival, Barnaba in La
Gioconda at the Orange Festival, and Escamillo in Carmen at
the Arena di Verona. He also appeared in productions of La fanciulla
del West in Munich, Vienna, Lyon, Bologna and Hamburg; Adriana
Lecouvreur at the Teatro Regio di Parma; Manon Lescaut in
Bologna; Simon Boccanegra at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma; Aida
in Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples and Cavalleria rusticana at the
Teatro di San Carlo; Le Villi and the Messa di Gloria in
Liège. He also appeared in concerts such as “Fuoco di Gioia” at Teatro
Regio di Parma and the Ildar Abdrazakov Festival in Moscow.
Engagements for the 2025–26 season include Tosca at the Teatro di
San Carlo, the Sofia Opera, the Finnish National Opera and Ballet in
Helsinki, the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Teatro Regio
di Torino; Carmen in a new production at the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi
in Salerno and in Treviso and Rovigo; La traviata at the Teatro
Comunale di Bologna; Aida at the National Centre for the
Performing Arts in Beijing and in a new production at the Teatro Massimo
di Palermo; and La fanciulla del West at the Puccini Festival in
Torre del Lago.
